Dear Friends:Editor's note: Because this is Christmas week, our weekly vigil will be on Tuesday instead of Thursday and we will distribute this newsletter on Monday. NOON VIGIL FOR PEACE: TUESDAY, DECEMBER 22, 2020 This week only, we will vigil for peace in front of the Rolla Post Office on TUESDAY, DECEMBER 22, FROM NOON TO 1:00 PM. Next week (and most subsequent weeks) we will return to Thursday vigils until Peace is established. Please join us this Tuesday in saying NO WAR AGAINST IRAN or any other country. The temperature is predicted to be in the 50s. If you do not feel comfortable standing with us in front of the Post Office, please consider driving by and showing your support for our message by honking your horn and flashing a peace sign. Note: Since there are so few of us, generally 2 or 3, no need to cancel; but let's maintain social distancing. 2. THE MISFIT MATHEMATICIAN (Tom's column, http://tomsager.org) Wall Street Sewer Rats Attack Dr. Jill Biden Generally, I steer clear of “trending” news items such as the Wall Street Journal's recent attack on Dr. Jill Biden, unless I feel that I have something to add to the story which is not being told in the news media. In case you missed it: The Wall Street Journal published an op-ed calling Jill Biden “kiddo” and telling her she was not a real doctor and ought not to be using the title. The Wall Street Journal has defended its decision to publish the op-ed. What I found perplexing was that Wall Street backed Joe Biden, big time. So why would the Wall Street Journal publish such a condescending sexist attack on his wife? Jill Biden is an educator. She holds a doctoral degree in Education. She has taught English and Education classes in community colleges for many years. She is probably the only individual to ever hold an outside job while serving as second spouse of the United States. She is a strong supporter of public education. On the other hand Wall Street has grown fat on publicly supported for-profit education. Think of all the public money funneled into private hands through school vouchers, charter schools, and student loans. In my opinion, this editorial was a thinly veiled threat against Doctor Biden from Wall Street. If you attack our cash cow: our vouchers, our loans, our charter schools, we will attack you any way we can. We will attack your gender. We will attack your credentials. We will attack your accomplishments. We will attack everything about you. I think Wall Street has made a big mistake. Jill Biden is very popular. Many influential people have come to her defense already — not that she is in need of being defended. She has impressed me as strong and courageous. I think she can take care of herself. On the other hand, those of us who believe in public education would do well to show our support for Dr. Biden. Wall Street, in its typical myopic fashion, has forgotten that our system of public education has given the United States the edge necessary to become a world leader in business, science, technology and many other areas — a role that we are now in the process of losing thanks to the degradation of public education, due in large part to Wall Street aggression.
