1. NOON VIGIL FOR PEACE: THURSDAY, DECEMBER 12, 2019

We vigil for peace in front of the Rolla Post Office, THIS THURSDAY, DECEMBER 12, FROM NOON TO 1:00 PM (and most subsequent Thursdays until Peace is established). Please try to join us. The temperature is predicted to be around 50. If you do not feel comfortable standing with us in front of the Post Office, please consider driving by and showing your support for our message by honking your horn and flashing a peace sign.

2. CITIZENS' CLIMATE LOBBY TO MEET SUNDAY, DECEMBER 15

The Rolla chapter of the Citizens' Climate Lobby will meet at 2:00pm on Sunday, December 15 in the meeting room in the children's section of the Rolla Public Library.

3. THE MISFIT MATHEMATICIAN (Tom's column, http://tomsager.org)
          a) From Our Readers: “Greed and Stupidity”
          b) Impeachment: An Article That Makes Sense
          c) Washington Post: The Pentagon Misled Us

From Our Readers: “Greed and Stupidity”
“Greed and stupidity make a lethal cocktail.”
—Dave Jorgenson

In reference to last week's newsletter on climate collapse in Australia and reduced investment in renewables in China, India and Brazil, a reader writes: “People are too greedy and stupid to survive. Very depressing.”

My response:

Extinction looks more and more likely each day. While the world burns, the US Congress just approved in committee a $738 billion giveaway to the Pentagon with virtually no restrictions on continuing their unconstitutional, immoral war-making in all corners of the world, an act which Bernie Sanders and Ro Khanna have dubbed “an act of astonishing moral cowardice.”

Meanwhile pro-climate organizations like 350.org refuse to challenge the military and its extrordinary contributions to global warming.

Greed and stupidity win again. And this from a species that prides itself on its brain-power.

17 years ago Eugene Linden wrote in The Octopus and the Orangutan:
“The random mutations that increase brain size are probably ubiquitous, meaning that it is reasonable to expect that virtually every animal alive today has ancestors that produced brainier offspring which in turn had the chance to be fruitful and multiply. But the evidence is that with very few exceptions, evolutionary experiments to increase brain power have not taken. ... The likelihood is that nature has had more failures than successes when it comes to increasing brain size (and in evolutionary terms, the jury is still out on whether the human experiment will ultimately be a success or failure...)”
How true!

Impeachment: Finally An Article That Makes Sense

Chris Hedges points out that the chances of the Senate convicting Donald Trump of impeachable offenses are virtually ZERO; and Democratic Representatives have scrupulously avoided including in their Articles of Impeachment any of Donald Trump's far greater crimes that Democrats are also guilty of.

Washington Post: The Pentagon Misled Us

After 18 years of War in Afghanistan costing hundreds of thousands of lives and trillions of dollars, the Washington Post has finally come around to the astonishing conclusion that the Pentagon has been lying to us.

Well, as someone who has argued for 18 years, since before the first bomb fell, that our War Against Afghanistan is a dirty immoral war which we should never have started and could never hope to win, I sit here waiting for an apology from the Washington Post and an invitation to write an editorial for them. I'm not holding my breath.
