Australia: Greenhouse Gas emissions Fall as Agriculture Collapses

The prolonged climate-change-induced drought has caused the Australian agriculture sector to literally collapse. Agriculture is responsible for a significant part of Australia's greenhouse gas emissions. Meanwhile, increased emissions from the LNG (liquefied natural gas) sector almost made up for the fall in emissions from agriculture and renewable energy generation combined.

And the fires — the worst season ever for bush-fires in Australia — and its not even southern-hemisphere summer yet.

I have a suggestion. Maybe Prime Minister Scott Morrison and his climate-change-denying crew could conserve water by drinking LNG instead.

Lately, I'm starting to hear words like collapse and extinction coming out of Australia. Australia is the least resilient of the six inhabited continents. I suspect the Australian continent will totally collapse within a few years; and I suspect the other continents won't be so very far behind.

Yuroks Bring “Good Fire” Back to California

For millennia the Yuroks and other California tribes practiced controlled burning, until the white man came and made burning the forest a crime. But the ancient wisdom is returning — one piece in the fight against climate change and wildfires.

Perhaps indigenous Australians also possessed the wisdom of how to use a little fire to restore health to the land and prevent uncontrollable wildfires. Anyone out there have any knowledge of indigenous Australian cultures?

China, India, Brazil: Investments in Clean Energy Down

China, in particular, investments in clean energy fell by $36 billion, as China embarks on a new coal-building spree. Hmmm, I wonder what the Chinese think of global warming. Perhaps they think it's an American Hoax.

200 Million Climate Refugees Since 2008

According to a new report from Oxfam International, 200 million people have been displaced by climate-related disasters since 2008. Think about that number — 200 million — over 2.5% of the global population. If Rolla were the world, around 500 of us would be climate refugees. And it's only going to get worse. Collapse is definitely underway.

Actually, we are quite blessed here in Rolla. We haven't been exposed to extreme weather since the Joplin tornado of 2011 and the drought of 2012. However, I suspect our turn will come.

Diplomacy Anyone?

Michelle Bachelet, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and former President of Chile, notes that popular protests are on the rise from Hong Kong to Iraq to Palestine to the UK to Chile. She stresses the importance of meaningful, inclusive dialogue, and of governments listening to the people. Excellent advice.

Unfortunately, it appears that many governments prefer collapse to dialogue, both internally and externally. Perhaps that will change. The world is in great danger and “We must, indeed, all hang together or, most assuredly, we shall all hang separately.” Yes, all 7.7 billion of us.
