NOON VIGIL FOR PEACE: THURSDAY, JULY 11, 2019 We vigil for peace in front of the Rolla Post Office, THIS THURSDAY, JULY 11, FROM NOON TO 1:00 PM (and most subsequent Thursdays until peace is established). Please try to join us. The temperature is predicted to be in the 80s. If you do not feel comfortable standing with us in front of the Post Office, please consider driving by and showing your support for our message by honking your horn and flashing a peace sign. 2. GREAT RIVERS ENVIRONMENTAL LAW CENTER TO VISIT ROLLA ON TUESDAY, JULY 30 Great Rivers Environmental Law Center will host an informal coffee conversation at Panera in Rolla from 1:30 to 3:00pm on Tuesday, July 30. Everyone is welcome. No fixed agenda. Come share your environmental concerns and hopes for the future of Rolla with Bruce Morrison, incoming President and lead attorney in the 11-year battle that saved Buehler Park; Kathleen Henry, retiring President and member of the Board of Directors; and Linden Mueller, Director of Outreach and Development. 3. THE MISFIT MATHEMATICIAN (Tom's column, http://tomsager.org) a) Is War Against Iran Coming? b) Criminalizing Compassion (Update) c) 90°F. in Anchorage, Alaska Is War Against Iran Coming? Since I last wrote about Iran two weeks ago, British pirates have seized an Iranian super-tanker off the coast of Gibraltar and Iran has begun enriching and stockpiling uranium beyond the limits of the JCPOA agreement, from which the United States has withdrawn. We are already at war with Iran. US imposed sanctions are an act of War. State Piracy is also an act of War. One question is how much further are the United States and their British ally prepared to push Iran and how will Iran respond? Another question is will China, Russia and the European Union sit back and watch or will they get involved. I can't answer these questions; but keep in mind how unsuccessful the United States has been so far in its War against Venezuela and that they appear ready to pull out of an unsuccessful 18-year-old war against Iran's neighbor, Afghanistan. I would suspect that Iran is not without the means to retaliate should they choose to. I would also suspect that War against Iran would be yet another war in which everyone loses. Criminalizing Compassion (Update) Last week I reported that Scott Warren's felony trial for rendering humanitarian assistance to migrants on our southern border ended in a hung jury. The Federal government has unfortunately chosen to retry the case. And I reported last week that Captain Carola Rackete who rescued 53 migrants off the coast of Libya had also been charged in Italy with a felony for her humanitarian work. Captain Rackete has been ordered released by an Italian judge who opined that she has doing her duty to protect life. 90°F. in Anchorage, Alaska This July 4, Anchorage, Alaska hit a whopping record-breaking temperature of 90°F. 90°F. in Alaska? This must be a Chinese hoax.
