Covid Origins (revisited)

Amidst renewed interest in the controversy between two conjectures on the origin of the SARS-CoV-2 virus: lab-leak v. natural evolution, Reuters has published a bombshell investigation detailing the Pentagon's misinformation offensive in developing nations to frame Chinese vaccines as harmful. This misinformation offensive was particularly pronounced in the Philippines where COVID-19 disease was running rampant. Apparently the Pentagon preferred to see Filipinos die of COVID than see them immunized with Chinese vaccines. (This is often referred to as winning hearts and minds.)

While the Reuters investigation does not speak directly to the lab-leak v. natural origin controversy, it does provide one more piece of *CIRCUMSTANTIAL EVIDENCE* for the *CONJECTURE* that the SARS-CoV-2 virus was created in a lab and released in China in a deliberate act of sabotage. After all, would a country that is willing to lie to get people to forego immunization to pandemic disease, hesitate to sabotage a country with a deadly virus?

You can read about the sabotage conjecture in my October 2021 post here. I still find it the most likely of all the origin conjectures that I have seen.

Reuters mentions a conjecture of George Webb [without attribution, making the conjecture seem to have originated in China] that SARS-CoV-2 came to China with a US military delegation to the Military World Games in Wuhan in October 2019. Far from using this unsupported conjecture to tarnish the United States, as Reuters implies, the Chinese publication, Global Times, quotes a Chinese professor as saying the US government needs to respond to the controversy and publish the relevant information regarding their [members of the US delegation] health status and infection record to clear public doubts and help with the scientific study on the virus' origin.

Personally, I found the whole story rather speculative and did not include it in my writing as evidence for or against the lab-creation and release as sabotage conjecture.

On the other hand, since virologists from Wuhan Institute of Virology had been working closely with their US counterparts on bat viruses, it is entirely plausible that SARS-CoV-2 was created at Fort Detrick or some other US laboratory and released in Wuhan, making it appear to have evolved naturally or been created in China.

In the past, I have suggested that the United States, China and all other countries open up their labs to independent international inspection. This suggestion was, of course, ignored by all parties, in spite of the millions of lives that could have been saved by this simple action.

Three Presidential Cartoons

To celebrate the release of Julian Assange from 14 years of custody for documenting US war crimes and crimes against humanity, and to celebrate the disastrous presidential debate in which both candidates proved themselves unfit to hold public office, I photocollaged three cartoons which appear front and center on my website.

Richard Heinberg on Nature-Based Climate Solutions

This article by Richard Heinberg is by far the best explanation I've seen yet on why technology-based solutions to our climate problems do not work, and why nature-based solutions are absolutely necessary. Heinberg notes, “Unlike technology, nature constantly repairs itself. It tends to clean up pollution, rather than spreading toxins.”

Hurricane Beryl and Other Climate Disasters

In case you missed it:

Hurricane Beryl became the earliest North Atlantic catagory V hurricane on record. After wreaking havoc on the Windward Islands and Jamaica, Beryl crossed the Yucatan peninsula, turned North, re-intensified and struck the Gulf Coast between Corpus Christi and Houston. The extent of the damage will be assessed within the next few days.

And hurricane season is only beginning. Wait until August and September.

And the Southwest United States is again setting heat records. Las Vegas saw its hottest day ever with temperatures topping out at 120°F.

And California is burning again — and its only July. Wait until August and September.

And after cutting $205 million from Florida's stormwater, wastewater, and sewer projects budget, Governor Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency due to heavy flooding in southern Florida.

And the monsoon rains in India are so strong this year that crocodiles are coming out of the rivers and walking the streets.
