1. NOON VIGIL FOR PEACE: THURSDAY, JANUARY 10, 2019

We vigil for peace in front of the Rolla Post Office, THIS THURSDAY, JANUARY 10, FROM NOON TO 1:00 PM (and most subsequent Thursdays until peace is established). Please try to join us. The temperature is predicted to be in the 30s. If you do not feel comfortable standing with us in front of the Post Office, please consider driving by and showing your support for our message by honking your horn and flashing a peace sign.

2. LOVE YOUR MOTHER

Years of fear-mongering about climate change have produced very little in the way of planetary rehabilitation. People just can't relate to the idea of possible human extinction 20, 30 or 50 years from now. There is nothing in our current experience to give us any clue to what that's going to look or feel like.

And of course, the capitalists who are profiting from the rape of the planet are mostly not going to be around for those last days. They are interested in what they can get for themselves now. So fear of extinction, of horrific weather catastrophes, flood and famine, is not making people care enough. Anyway, fighting with fear rarely wins anything worth having.

Charles Eisenstein presents a radical concept: If we can ignite the spark of love for nature and the earth that exists in everyone, however buried, people will be inspired to fight for what they love. Nature is alive. The planet is alive. All the life we have comes from her. Isn't that gift worthy of love and gratitude? Isn't life worth fighting for?

The focus of scientific thought about climate change is not that different from the capitalists'. They are fixated on somehow finding a way to keep on growing and consuming and profiting without destroying ourselves in the process. It's that process itself, based on acquisition and greed, that is destroying us. And where that comes from is the bottomless and unfillable hole in our collective heart that only love, not stuff or money, can mend.

Is love all we need? No idea, but what we're doing isn't working. Read this thoughtful essay and see what you think.

3. THE MISFIT MATHEMATICIAN (Tom's column, http://tomsager.org)
          a) And She Can Dance Too!
          b) Impeach The M-----F-----?
          c) Last “Adult” Standing

AND SHE CAN DANCE TOO!
“We can't expect America to win against its foes,
With no one in the Senate who can really tap his toes.”
Tom Lehrer

Well, maybe a young lady in the House of Representatives will do. Especially since America's greatest foes are mostly in Washington; and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who has barely been seated, is already standing up to America's foes like no one else in Congress — not even Bernie.

The anonymous individual who posted a college video of Alexandria dancing calls her “America's favorite commie,” which brings to mind this song: You aint done nothing if you ain't been called a red. (Red here refers to communist, not republican.)

And here's a more recent video of Alexandria dancing.

Incidentally, I don't think we've had a dancer in Congress since one-term republican senator George Murphy (1965-1970).

IMPEACH THE M-----F-----?

Well, I've weighed in on this before. Donald Trump is a symptom; not the disease. The disease is militarism and imperialism. I want to banish the disease, not impeach the symptom.

There was a time in my life when I loved to use words like m-f-. I like to think I've grown up a little since then, although some may dispute that. But here's what bothers me: Why is it ok for president Donald Trump to brag about grabbing women by the p---y; but not ok for Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib to say, “Impeach the M-F-”? Perhaps there is a double standard here.

In any case, Donald Trump might actually pull our troops out of Syria which would be a good thing. Let's wait to see if he's serious before we impeach him.

LAST “ADULT” STANDING

James “Mad-Dog” Mattis, hailed as the last “adult” in the Trump administration, departed a few weeks ago complaining about Trump's decision to withdraw US troops from Syria.

Mad-Dog Mattis commanded the 1st Marine Division in Iraq during both sieges of Fallujah in 2004. Troops under his command bombed hospitals and fired on ambulances and medical workers. These are war crimes. Donald Trump appointed this war criminal Secretary of Defense and the Senate confirmed him. If this is the way “adults” behave, then maybe I ought to start saying “motherfucker” again.

CRICKETS RULE!
“And the crickets are breaking his heart with their song,
As the day caves in and the night is all wrong.”
—Leonard Cohen (Ballad of the Absent Mare)
Back in 2016, US diplomats in Havana claimed they were under sonic attack at the US embassy and produced a recording. Well, the recording has been analyzed and turns our to be the mating call of a species of cricket.

Alexander Stubbs of the University of California-Berkeley opines, “It’s entirely possible that they got sick with some other completely unrelated thing that was not a sonic attack, or that they were targeted in some other way.”

But I have a conjecture: I think that maybe the diplomats were just responding in a totally natural way to the mating calls of these crickets. Perhaps the doctors and scientists will research my conjecture further.
