1. NOON VIGIL FOR PEACE: THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 2020

We vigil for peace in front of the Rolla Post Office, THIS THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 19, FROM NOON TO 1:00 PM (and most subsequent Thursdays until Peace is established). Please join us again this Thursday in saying NO WAR AGAINST IRAN or any other country. The temperature is predicted to be in the 60s. If you do not feel comfortable standing with us in front of the Post Office, please consider driving by and showing your support for our message by honking your horn and flashing a peace sign.

Note: Since there are so few of us, generally 2 or 3, no need to cancel; but let's maintain social distancing.

From Our Readers: Pray for Peace and Forgiveness

A reader writes:
“Good read...late reading, but just as informative. I wish we could say at last it's over. But this man (Trump), is like the doggone energizer bunny...he keeps going and going and going! ENOUGH ALREADY.

I am now, more than ever, convinced that what is happening in the United States, under the leadership of Trump is biblical in nature. I believe he has been allowed to cause so much division and hatred, while at the same time dismissing the facts that our climate is being destroyed. This coupled with Fellow Americans dying preventable deaths, systemic racism and lack of humanity, respect and dignity that shouts Black Lives Don't Matter, right before our very eyes.

All this cannot be orchestrated by one man! I believe God is calling on true believers to come together in prayer and pray for our country, our leaders, and ask for forgiveness. God's hand has been on the United States of America from the beginning, and this Country was founded In God We Trust. We have dismissed him in all our ways. God is disappointed, hurt, and angry. His wrath is at work, but this is nothing compared to what could be.

Wherever we are, and whatever we believe...know this, The worst prayer, collective prayer can do, is help! I'm praying for peace and forgiveness for our United States of America, and for both spiritual and political leaders.

“Dear readers, I know I'm all up in my feelings...but I'm just sharing how I feel. This is my stuff, no judgement, no pressures. Just one reader's opinion.”

My response:

Thank you for this wonderful statement.

I too believe that events of recent years are scriptural in nature. I believe that Donald Trump is a punishment visited upon us by the Almighty — a punishment for creating a society in which a small minority with obscene wealth and power systematically oppress billions, those most beloved of God. Did you think God would let stand a people whose nuclear weapons threaten the entire world with annihilation? Did you think God would let stand a society that for greed and power would desecrate and pollute the entire planet? Did you think that God would let stand a country that tears children from their parents and keeps them in cages?

I fear that Donald Trump is only a warning. If we cannot build a more peaceful, just and equitable world, I fear the next punishment will be far greater.

From Our Readers: Rolla Makes National News With Superspreader Event

In reference to the Daily Beast article on the “private” homecoming dance at Matt's Steakhouse that turned into a superspreader event, a reader writes:
“And, goodness, what were those parents thinking? We don't go inside places without masks, and we sure don't go into crowded places for a homecoming dance. ... COVID is spreading at such high rates again. Stay safe.”
My response:

I can't say what those parents were thinking; but I suspect they had been drinking too much kool-aid.

On a positive note, I watched a video of yesterday's Rolla City Council meeting and it appears that Mayor Magdits and many members of the Rolla City Council are finally getting it. We may have an ordinance banning such events by next week. As Mayor Magdits put it, there comes a time when you have to put your ideology aside. (video of meeting to be posted soon)

Again, this was all very predictable. Here's a couple of quotes from previous newsletters:

Rolla Peace News, January 28, 2020 (when the United States had 5 confirmed cases of COVID-19).
“While it's too early to know how far this epidemic will spread, one thing is certain: humanity is ripe for a major epidemiological catastrophe. There are many reasons: war, poverty, a changing climate and overpopulation are just some that come to mind.

“The United States is perhaps particularly vulnerable. We've gutted our public health infrastructure in favor of for-profit health care. When people are afraid to seek medical help because they might end up paying for it for the rest of their lives, how are we to keep contagious disease from spreading?”
Rolla Peace News, February 11, 2020 (when the United States had 12 confirmed cases of COVID-19)
“‘Human civilization’ is primed for a global epidemic of gargantuan proportions. The Wuhan coronavirus epidemic may be only a harbinger of what is to come.

“The United States, with it's for-profit health industry, is perhaps the least able of all wealthy countries to respond positively to such an epidemic. How do you fight an epidemic when a large part of the population is too poor to afford to go to a doctor? How do you fight an epidemic when a large part of the population is so afraid, that it would not bring itself to the attention of the authorities anyway? How do you fight an epidemic in a society that has become so used to blaming others for everything that goes wrong, that it has lost its power of introspection?”
In late March, The United States became the country with the most confirmed COVID-19 infections, surpassing China, Spain and Italy. The US has held that title ever since and now has 11.7 million confirmed cases, 2.8 million more than India, which now has the world's second most confirmed COVID-19 infections. Lately the United States has been averaging over 150 thousand new infections daily. (COVID data from worldometers)

From Our Readers: On Hurricanes Eta and Iota in Central America

A reader writes:
They [Central American countries] are just recovering from Eta and here comes another today [Iota]. If Eta hadn't wiped out the crops, I can't imagine they will survive this one. ... Frustrates me so much that rich countries take such advantage of poor countries—climate change caused by the rich countries is causing this. I wish our gov't “leaders” could see how we're all connected.
My response:

This 2020 Atlantic Hurricane season is unprecedented, with 30 named storms already. 2005, the year of Hurricane Katrina, was the previous record holder with 28; and this season is not over yet. Major Atlantic Hurricanes in November have been extremely rare; but, 2020 has seen two already and November is not over yet.

Yes, it is the wealthy countries that are most responsible for climate change; and the poor countries that are most vulnerable to it. A warming climate makes hurricanes and many other natural disasters so much more likely.
