For the Soldier, War Never Ends
“We’re sold the idea of—we’re going to liberate people, we’re fighting terrorism. Then we realize we’re the ones terrorizing people. That torments you psychologically. I’ve lost a few friends to suicide.”
Michael Hanes (Iraq Veteran)

“Victory is not a pleasant thing.
Those who are pleased by victory
Are pleased with the slaughter of others.
Those who are pleased with the slaughter of others
Have no just place in this world.”
—Laozi (Tao Te Ching ~550BCE)

This article by Matthew Hoh on Veterans, Moral Injury and Suicide is a Must Read. Combat veterans often suffer from moral injury for the rest of their lives. Hoh notes that the only way to stop veterans from suiciding, is to stop sending them to war.

People were not meant to kill each other. It takes billions of dollars worth of conditioning to get soldiers to kill. And when the conditioning wears off, it can leave them crippled for the rest of their life. Hoh writes, “The reality is that deaths by suicide often kill veterans at a level greater than combat, while the primary reason for these deaths lie in the immoral and ghastly nature of war itself.”

If you read nothing else this week, read Matthew Hoh's “And the Armies That Remained Suffer’d: Veterans, Moral Injury and Suicide”

And if you are a veteran, please consider joining Veterans for Peace.
