1. NOON VIGIL FOR PEACE: THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 2019

We vigil for peace in front of the Rolla Post Office, THIS THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 7, FROM NOON TO 1:00 PM (and most subsequent Thursdays until Peace is established). Please try to join us. The temperature is predicted to be around 40. If you do not feel comfortable standing with us in front of the Post Office, please consider driving by and showing your support for our message by honking your horn and flashing a peace sign.

2. THE MISFIT MATHEMATICIAN (Tom's column, http://tomsager.org)

          b) California: Fires May Soon Be Fully Contained
          c) Climate Data: Warmest October on Record

Syria: I Misspoke

I definitely misspoke two weeks ago when I wrote:
“it looks like Vladimir Putin has pulled a rabbit out of a hat. He appears to have brokered a Peace in which Turkey and the Syrian Kurds will get enough of what they desire that they will go along with the plan, leaving Russia and the Syrian government firmly in control.”
The US called it quits in Syria — well, not exactly. The US came back to save the Syrian oil fields, that were (presumably) rendered unusable by US bombs, from the Islamic State, that was (presumably) defeated, and to assassinate “Big Daddy” Baghdadi, who was (presumably) defeated too. Now it looks like everybody is pretty much against everybody else.

So if the United States had really left Syria, could Russia have cobbled together a Peace and made it stick? Who knows? But, I thought it worth a try. After all, the United States has been the major global power in the region for a long time, and has brought the Middle East little besides war and misery. Isn't it time for someone else to have a try?

California: Fires May Soon Be Fully Contained

Could have been worse. Nowhere near as bad as 2017 or 2018 — at least not yet. California fire season is not over by a long shot.

Now here is an interesting wrinkle. Insurance companies and wealthy homeowners are hiring private firefighters to protect their assets. Your life could be in danger; but they won't help you. Their mission is to protect their employer's life and property.

And if you are a low-paid domestic worker, you may end up staying behind and feeding your employer's cat while he evacuates to safer territory.

Most interesting, some are now saying that parts of California have become too dangerous to live in, and it may be time to give them back to Nature. Not at the end of the century, or in 2050 or even 2030 — NOW.

Climate Data: Warmest October on Record

According to the Copernicus Programme, the Earth has just experienced the warmest October on record, although just barely above October 2015 which was previously the warmest October on record. Copernicus estimates October 2019 as 1.32° C. warmer than “pre-industrial” times.

And the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere during October 2019 increased by 2.53 ppm over October 2018.
