          Thoughts on Tuesday's Election

==================

1. TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 3, ELECTION DAY, VOTE! (IT MAY BE YOUR LAST CHANCE)

If you think I'm kidding, watch this video of Trump supporters trying to run a Biden bus and entourage off the road. The Texas Highway Patrol is nowhere in sight, in spite of multiple calls to 9-11. The video is embedded in this excellent article by Juan Cole.

2. NOON VIGIL FOR PEACE: THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 2020

We vigil for peace in front of the Rolla Post Office, THIS THURSDAY, November 5, FROM NOON TO 1:00 PM (and most subsequent Thursdays until Peace is established). Please join us again this Thursday in saying NO WAR AGAINST IRAN or any other country. The temperature is predicted to be in the 60s. If you do not feel comfortable standing with us in front of the Post Office, please consider driving by and showing your support for our message by honking your horn and flashing a peace sign.

Note: Since there are so few of us, generally 2 or 3, no need to cancel; but let's maintain social distancing.

3. THE MISFIT MATHEMATICIAN (Tom's column, http://tomsager.org)

Thoughts on Tuesday's Election

In the past, winning a free and fair election used to be the goal — no longer. Now, it's winning at any cost. For some, even mass murder and suicide has become preferable to losing. Consider:

Friday, the US experienced around 100,000 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 (slightly less by some counts, slightly more by others) and close to 1,000 deaths with COVID. By comparison, China has experienced less than 86,000 confirmed cases and 5,000 deaths over the entire life of the pandemic. Think about this: 16% more new cases in one day than China has experienced in 11 months. It didn't have to be this way.

President Donald Trump famously said in March, “One day, its like a miracle, it will disappear.” After bringing its epidemic under control, China claimed that if the world followed China's example, the pandemic could be over by June.

The world hasn't. The pandemic rages evermore out of control (except in China and possibly a few other locations). Over 1.2 million dead worldwide, 236 thousand in the United States — mass murder and suicide.

Climate change is another example. We've experienced what may be this country's worst four-year period ever when it comes to hurricane, drought, wildfire and other climatic disasters. But, according to some, climate change is still a Chinese hoax.

Yet another example: nuclear war. I can well imagine those who hold the nuclear triggers taking down the world in a mass murder/suicide event — like Jim Jones and the Peoples Temple — only this time we're not just talking 918 people, we're talking hundreds of millions, maybe billions.

I think it might be helpful if our next president had a somewhat better grip on reality that our current president.

Wage peace,
Tom
