1. VIGIL MOVED TO FRIDAY, THIS WEEK ONLY

Instead of a Thursday vigil this week, we will join the Global Strike for the Climate and vigil on Friday for the Climate, for the Environment and for Peace. Next week we return to Thursday vigils for Peace.

2. FRIDAY, SEPT. 20: CLIMATE STRIKE COMES TO ROLLA

Please forward the note below to anyone you know in the area who would be interested in joining the Global Strike for the Climate:
The Global Strike for the Climate is only three days away. I think this is the first time Rolla has participated in such an event. There will be thousands of similar events going on all over the World.

We will gather by the Post Office at the corner of 8th and Park at Noon on Friday, Sept. 20 and vigil for the Climate, the Environment and for Peace until 1:00pm. Bring signs if you have them. If not, don't worry, we have some extras.

A few rules for the vigil:
1. Be respectful of passers-by.

2. Don't block the sidewalk, or the entrances and exits from the parking lot or the post office.

3. Don't vigil on private property, including Post Office property.

4. Stand back 25 feet from the corner so as not to impair the vision of motorists approaching the intersection.
We are hoping for a strong turnout and a very positive public event.

See you all this Friday,
Tom

3. SUNDAY, SEPT. 22: GREAT RIVERS ENVIRONMENTAL LAW CENTER TO HONOR KATHLEEN HENRY

At their annual awards celebration, Great Rivers Environmental Law Center will honor Kathleen Henry, retiring President of Great Rivers, for her decades of environmental activism. The celebration will be held at the Whittemore House, 6440 Forsyth Blvd. in St. Louis from 5:00pm to 7:30pm on Sunday, September 22. Tickets can be purchased online at Great Rivers' website.

Were it not for Kathleen Henry and Great Rivers Environmental Law Center, Rolla would have surely lost Buehler Park years ago. Please join in the celebration if you can.

4. TUESDAY, SEPT 24: BERNIE SANDERS PLAN TO WIN PARTY

Bernie Sanders Plan to Win Party from 7 to 9pm, Tuesday, Sept. 24 at 307 Santa Fe Trails, Rolla. RSVP here.

5. THURSDAY, SEPT. 26: CITIZENS CLIMATE LOBBY MEETING

Citizens Climate Lobby will meet at 5:30 pm on September 26 in the meeting room of the Rolla Public Library. The film, “Ice on Fire” will be shown.

6.THE MISFIT MATHEMATICIAN (Tom's column, http://tomsager.org)
          a) 2° C. of Warming
          b) August 2019: A Three Way Tie for Second Place
          c) War Against Iran: Lying Prepares the Way

2° C. of Warming

This article from the Washington Post details those parts of the Earth which have warmed 1.5° C or more since the late 1800s. Some takeaway points from the maps that accompany this article:
1. The Arctic has experienced the most warming of anywhere on the planet — up to 6° C. in places. The Antarctic is labeled insufficient data.

2. Most of the Greater Middle East and Europe have warmed over 1.5° C. The entire Country of Iraq and most of neighboring Iran and Syria have warmed 2.0° C. or more.

3. Most of the land surface of the globe has warmed at least 1.5° C. Water warms more slowly than land, and except for a few hot spots has not reached 1.5° C. yet.
I found the discussion of Uruguay that lies next to an ocean hot spot that has warmed 2.0° C. interesting. I highly recommend this article.

August 2019: A Three Way Tie for Second Place

NOAA published its global climate data for August yesterday. August 2019 has warmed 0.92° C above the 20th Century average and is in a three-way tie for second place with 2017 and 2015, behind first place August 2016 which has warmed 0.98° C. over the same period.

The last five 12 month periods ending in August are the five warmest on record.

In August 2019, CO2 in the atmosphere increased by 2.96 ppm over August 2018

It is highly likely that much of this increase is due to wide-spread forest fires in the Amazon, the Arctic and elsewhere, as well our continued use of fossil-fuels and other climate destructive behaviors.

What can you do? Attend the Global Strike for the Climate at Noon, Friday, Sept. 20 in front of the Rolla Post Office. (See above for details.) Then go out and plant a tree.

War Against Iran: Lying Prepares the Way

After hearing for days that Iran had delivered the oil on the Adrian Darya to Syria after giving “written assurance” that they wouldn't, we read that Gibraltar’s chief minister Fabian Picardo said, “you can see from the images that the oil [from the Iranian oil tanker Adrian Darya 1] has ended up in Syria but that’s not to say that there’s a breach of the undertaking [by Iran].” So far, this “written assurance” does not appear to be a “public document.” Keep in mind that by international law, unilateral EU sanctions (against Syria) have no legal effect on third parties (such as Iran); and the seizing of the Adrian Darya was simply an act of piracy on the high seas.

And the US State Department is blaming Iran for a recent drone strike on Saudi Arabia's oil facilities without one shred of evidence that Iran was involved. Indeed, it was Saudi Arabia, not Iran, that bombed a Yemeni school bus last year, killing 40 with a made-in-the-USA bomb, and has since continued to commit atrocities against the Yemeni people. Don't the Yemenis have a Right under international law to retaliate against such crimes against humanity?
