We vigil for peace in front of the Rolla Post Office, THIS THURSDAY, JULY 23, FROM NOON TO 1:00 PM (and most subsequent Thursdays until Peace is established). Please join us again this Thursday in saying NO WAR AGAINST IRAN or any other country. The temperature is predicted to be around 90. If you do not feel comfortable standing with us in front of the Post Office, please consider driving by and showing your support for our message by honking your horn and flashing a peace sign.

Note: Since there are so few of us, generally 2 or 3, no need to cancel; but let's maintain social distancing.

When Empires Dissolve
“When dying regimes collapse, they do so with dizzying speed.” —Chris Hedges
We live in momentous times. We live at a time when the United States of America is literally coming unglued.

Here is the latest: Federal agents in Portland, Oregon driving in unmarked vehicles kidnapped protesters off the streets and beat up and gassed a Navy veteran who asked them to remember their oath to defend the Constitution. City and State elected officials have told the feds, “Get out.” So far, they have refused. And they threaten to do the same in other cities.

Oregon seems to be the Bellwether State. Four years ago, it was the armed takeover of the Malheur National Wildlife Reservation by the militia movement. Today, it's the streets of Portland.

I'm wondering: How much longer before the military takeover of an incompetent inept civilian government whose response to an out-of control pandemic seems to be Do no testing; Do no reporting?

Or perhaps the United States will simply dissolve into regional blocks as the Soviet Union did 30 years ago.

I find the former far more likely — the culmination of two long-standing campaigns: “get big government off our backs” and “support the troops.” I wonder: At this point, how many would actually welcome a military takeover?

Palestine and Israel

Seems like some influential Jewish-Americans are finally coming to realize that the “Two-State Solution” is dead and salvation lies in a single state with equal rights for all. It's been a long time coming.

Israel is having some of the same problems as the United States as the COVID-19 pandemic rampages through the population and street demonstrations against a corrupt ineffectual government elicit a violent government response.

The 50 pound elephant turd in the middle of the room that no one talks about is Israel's relationship with the United States. Israel exists on the largesse of the United States, to the tune of billions of dollars each year and non-monetary perks such as shelter from condemnation in the United Nations Security Council, Right now, the United States can't even take care of itself much less a country thousands of miles away.

Israel may indeed be forced, out of necessity, to come to terms with its Palestinian subjects. This would certainly be advantageous for both peoples and for the entire Middle East.

How the United States and Western Europe would deal with a strong, independent, multi-national, nuclear-armed state in this oil-rich region of the world will be a topic for another day's discussion.

Rolla Peace News is distributed by email once a week on Tuesday evenings (except on rare occasions) and is posted on the web at http://tomsager.org (click on Grassroots Rolla: at the top of rightmost column).
