NOON VIGIL FOR PEACE: THURSDAY, JUNE 28, 2018 We vigil for peace in front of the Rolla Post Office THIS THURSDAY, JUNE 28, FROM NOON TO 1:00 PM (and most subsequent Thursdays until peace is established). Please try to join us. The temperature is predicted to be in the 90s. If you do not feel comfortable standing with us in front of the Post Office, please consider driving by and showing your support for our message by honking your horn and flashing a peace sign. 2. MAKING A KILLING ON KILLING Most of you are probably aware that our country's wars are fought for profit, not for freedom, Mom and apple pie. So who profits? A huge portion of the profits go to weapons manufacturers — the military-industrial complex. Of the $750 billion handed to the Pentagon last year, $350 billion, nearly half, went to these folks. And their profit margins are not small; they can ask whatever price they like for their instruments of destruction, and the military will pay it. After all, it's coming out of our pockets, not theirs. But before you go all indignant and self-righteous, please consider whether you are contributing to the continuance of our incessant wars by virtue of your investments. Most mutual funds hold stocks like Raytheon, Lockheed, Boeing, and other purveyors of death and devastation — those stocks have done very well for investors, at the expense of people here and abroad who could never afford to invest. As Jodie Evans and Andrew Behar point out, there is now a way to find out whether or not your investments are supporting the warmongers: a new web-based tool called Weapon-Free Funds. You can enter the name or ticker designation of any fund and find out what portion of their invested capital is funding war. You can also do this at Divest From War Machine. If you wonder why you should do this, read this article. 3. THE MISFIT MATHEMATICIAN (Tom's column, http://tomsager.org) THE WAR AGAINST CHILDREN CONTINUES There is a lot being written now about our disgusting inhumane abuse of children at our southern border, which includes separation from parents and indefinite detention in cages that resemble dog kennels. Will Bunch points out that this is nothing new and just a continuation of policy under the Obama and Bush administrations. Abby Zimet points out that Amerindian children in the United States were torn from their parents and sent involuntarily to boarding schools. Children of slaves were property of their master and could be and often were sold at whim. So what's different now? Donald Trump is so crude and bombastic that our War on Children has been exposed to the whole world for what it is. And more importantly, exposed to each and every one of us to the point where we can no longer deny it, make any reasonable excuses for it or even claim that it is just a few “bad apples.” Its an event similar to the My Lai massacre, where in one rural village US troops massacred over 400 women, children, and old men. There were many other such massacres during the Vietnam War, but My Lai was the event that exposed our genocidal policy to each and every one of us. But, here is the danger: Don't let this be viewed as the evil machinations of one deranged dotard. This is and has been US policy, our policy, for centuries. It is way past time for self-examination. It is way past time to put an end to this brutal war against children.
