NOON VIGIL FOR PEACE: THURSDAY, JUNE 25, 2020 We vigil for peace in front of the Rolla Post Office, THIS THURSDAY, JUNE 25, FROM NOON TO 1:00 PM (and most subsequent Thursdays until Peace is established). Please join us again this Thursday in saying NO WAR AGAINST IRAN or any other country. The temperature is predicted to be in the 80s. If you do not feel comfortable standing with us in front of the Post Office, please consider driving by and showing your support for our message by honking your horn and flashing a peace sign. Note: Since there are so few of us, generally 2 or 3, no need to cancel; but let's maintain social distancing. 2. THE MISFIT MATHEMATICIAN (Tom's column, http://tomsager.org) a) Public Health b) Peaceful Protesters c) A Failed State? Public Health Thinking of a career in Public Health? You might want to think a little harder. Folks are leaving the profession in droves. Seems like a lot of folks don't care to be healthy. Worse than that, they don't care if others are healthy either. And even worse than that, they'll viciously attack anyone who works to keep folks healthy. Well, we are a free people. We have a Right to our diseases. And we have a Right to spread them around freely. We are a free people; and as former president George W. Bush once remarked, "They hate our freedoms." Maybe this was what he was referring to. Maybe they hate our freedom to spread disease. Well, cases of COVID-19 are, very predictably, on the rise in the United States. Having fallen briefly below 20,000 new cases per day, we have now, for the first time since April, surpassed 30,000 new cases in four of the last five days. A rise in mortality will very likely follow on the heals of the rise in new infections. Peaceful Protesters Amnesty International has come out with a well-researched article on the US response to Peaceful Protests. Amnesty documents 125 recent incidents of Human Rights violations by law enforcement in 40 states and the District of Columbia including indiscriminate use of tear gas, flash grenades, and rubber bullets on mostly peaceful protesters. A Failed State? Adding to the twin scourges of militarism and climate change, we now have pandemic disease and a break down in internal order with state-sponsored vigilante justice replacing even a semblance of law and order. And our deranged dotard of a chief executive seems bent upon making the situation as unstable as possible. I think we are fast approaching Failed State status. (You know, like Yemen or Afghanistan.) We may become the world's first Failed State with Nuclear Weapons. (The former Soviet Union may have come close in the 1990s.) Think about that! A Failed State with Nuclear Weapons. I'm wondering... Did any of our oh so smart scientists that developed Nuclear Weapons and any of our oh so smart business executives, politicians, diplomats and generals ever think about this? A Failed State with Nuclear Weapons.
