1. NOON VIGIL FOR PEACE: THURSDAY, JUNE 13, 2019

We vigil for peace in front of the Rolla Post Office, THIS THURSDAY, JUNE 13 FROM NOON TO 1:00 PM (and most subsequent Thursdays until peace is established). Please try to join us. The temperature is predicted to be around 70. If you do not feel comfortable standing with us in front of the Post Office, please consider driving by and showing your support for our message by honking your horn and flashing a peace sign.

2. THE MISFIT MATHEMATICIAN (Tom's column, http://tomsager.org)
          a) Defense Authorizations and Appropriations
          b) Afghanistan
          c) California Burning

DEFENSE AUTHORIZATIONS AND APPROPRIATIONS

The House is considering Defense Authorizations and Appropriations and there are a number of proposed amendments that would rein in our warmacht — just a little bit. Here is a list of some of them. Please consider asking chairman Jim McGovern to bring all bills that would result in less war to the floor for a vote by signing the petition here. Also, ask your Rep. to support them.

This is unprecedented. The military usually gets everything it wants and more without any effective opposition. This is why we have been holding vigils for Peace for the past 12 years. Maybe in another 12 years we will really have Peace on Earth.

One important bill omitted from the list is Betty McCollum's HR2407 that would prevent any of the Billions of Dollars we give to Israel in military aid from being spent to imprison, interrogate or torture children.
“Israel’s system of military juvenile detention is state-sponsored child abuse designed to intimidate and terrorize Palestinian children and their families,” McCollum said. “It must be condemned, but it is equally outrageous that U.S. tax dollars in the form of military aid to Israel are permitted to sustain what is clearly a gross human rights violation against children.”
AFGHANISTAN

In case you have wondered about this woebegone land that we have been bombing the crap out of for nearly 18 years, Vijay Prasad gives us a rundown on the so-called “Peace Talks” and other matters. The Taliban's demands are simple: Just get out of our country. I won't vouch for all Prasad says, but I'm definitely on board with his final paragraph:
“The peace talks in Qatar and Russia will not immediately result in any direct outcome. Afghanistan is damaged beyond belief, its own future less important to the external parties than their own petty gains.”
Meanwhile the Taliban continues to make gains on the ground.

CALIFORNIA BURNING

If you thought global warming might give California a respite from the last two years of devastating wildfires, think again. Summer has arrived again with a vengeance of heat and fire.

And India is experiencing a monster drought and heat wave with temperatures breaking 50°C (122°F). Monkeys are said to be killing each other over access to water, a behavior never before documented in monkeys.

But don't worry folks — its only a Chinese hoax.
