1. NOON VIGIL FOR PEACE: THURSDAY, MAY 14, 2020

We vigil for peace in front of the Rolla Post Office, THIS THURSDAY, MAY 14, FROM NOON TO 1:00 PM (and most subsequent Thursdays until Peace is established). Please join us again this Thursday in saying NO WAR AGAINST IRAN or any other country. The temperature is predicted to be in the 70s. If you do not feel comfortable standing with us in front of the Post Office, please consider driving by and showing your support for our message by honking your horn and flashing a peace sign.

Note: Since there are so few of us, generally 2 or 3, no need to cancel; but let's maintain social distancing.

2. THE MISFIT MATHEMATICIAN (Tom's column, http://tomsager.org)

Tired of Writing About COVID-19

I'm tired of writing about COVID-19. If you wish, you can get the latest numbers at worldometers.org. (Really love this site! Hope you do too. Their data is basically the same as everybody else's — as reported. However, I find their tables and graphs more up-to-date and easier to read than those on other sites.)

It cannot be stressed too much that the numbers therein are only as good as the reported data, which may or may not faithfully represent the situation on the ground.

I would, however, be remiss if I didn't recommend to you this article by Belle Chesler, who is a teacher of visual arts in the Beaverton, Oregon public schools. Chesler talks about how inadequate distance learning is as a replacement for the hands-on classroom experience.

I sure do miss reading to my classes at Mark Twain. (No, I'm not going to start reading on Zoom.)

STOP now and read Chesler's article.

Addicted to War

Seems like some folks are so addicted to War, they can't let go for even a minute. While most of the world would welcome a global ceasefire, the United States blocked the ceasefire resolution in the UN Security Council.

Bay of Pigs Redux

And while you were wondering about whether it will be safe to reopen all that has been closed, two former US Special Forces agents staged a raid on Venezuela, hoping to capture President Nicolás Maduro and win the $15 million reward that Donald Trump has placed on Maduro's head.

It was about as successful as the 1961 Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba or attempts to assassinate Fidel Castro with a loaded cigar. The perpetrators are being held in Venezuela; and it looks like they may be spilling the beans.

Climate Data

And some global climate data for April has been released. April 2020 was (according to one model) the second warmest April on record, just barely behind first-place April 2016. More on this next week after NOAA releases its global climate data for April.

Maybe I'll feel more like writing next week. We'll see.
