The temperature is predicted in around 60. If you do not feel comfortable standing with us in front of the Post Office, please consider driving by and showing your support for our message by honking your horn and flashing a peace sign.

THREE MILE ISLAND AT 40

40 years ago this coming Thursday, the United States experienced its worst industrial accident ever, when the core at one of the nuclear reactors at Three Mile Island melted down. Had the world heeded the warning and shut down the nuclear power industry then, we would have been spared the disasters at Chernobyl and Fukushima and likely, more to come in the future. Unfortunately, oblivious to the danger, we push on.

Arnie Gundersen, who was part of the nuclear establishment at the time, discusses the lies and the cover-up that he participated in. These lies continue long after they have been exposed. Sunday, I received a email from a cheerleader for the nuclear power industry claiming there were no radiation releases at Three Mile Island, almost 40 years after this lie was first exposed.

Gundersen also discusses the lies and the cover-up at Fukushima where eight years ago three nuclear reactor cores melted down in one of the world's two worst nuclear accidents. Oblivious to the people's health, the Japanese government has raised “acceptable” doses of radiation by a factor of 20 in order to declare that it is now safe for people to return to their homes. Meanwhile, the three melted reactor cores are still in contact with groundwater and transferring deadly radiation to the Pacific Ocean.

Gundersen recommends sealing off the three reactors for 100 years, after which they may have cooled down enough that they can be cleaned up. The Japanese nuclear establishment appears unlikely to follow this sage advice.

THEY SHOOT TEACHERS, DON'T THEY?

When I first read about this, I didn't believe it. So I did a little research; and here it is, right in the IndyStar. Teachers at Meadowlawn Elementary School in Indiana were deliberately shot in the back with a pellet gun during an “active shooter” training exercise. One teacher remarked, “It hurt so bad.” Now teachers are lobbying the Indiana state legislature to pass a law prohibiting the shooting of teachers during active shooter training exercises.

Methinks we need to lower the level of violence in our society, not add to it.
