1. NOON VIGIL FOR PEACE: THURSDAY, MARCH 22, 2018

We vigil for peace in front of the Rolla Post Office THIS THURSDAY, MARCH 22, 2018, (and all subsequent Thursdays until peace is established) from Noon to 1:00 PM. Please try to join us. The temperature is predicted to be around 60. If you do not feel comfortable standing with us in front of the Post Office, please consider driving by and showing your support for our message by honking your horn and flashing a peace sign.

2. NAO ROZ MUBARAK (HAVE A BLESSED NEW YEAR)

In Afghanistan the New Year is celebrated on the first day of Spring, Tuesday, March 20. (This makes far more sense to me than celebrating the New Year 10 days after the winter solstice.) Nao Roz is also celebrated in Iran and throughout much of Central Asia. Pray that this year will bring Peace to Afghanistan and the rest of the world.

11:15 am CDT today was Spring Equinox. We've been doing well here in South-Central Missouri, weather-wise. Nice rain we got last night and sunshine today. Some other places did not do so well. The Northeast Atlantic Coast has been socked with Winter storm after Winter storm this month. The fourth March Winter storm is slated to move in tonight. Let's count our blessings! More on climate and weather next week.

3. OUR FEARLESS EDITOR IS IN NEW MEXICO

Helen is at a retreat in New Mexico; so I'm trying my best to fill her shoes here. Maybe, she will be able to bring some much needed precipitation to New Mexico, 25% of which is in extreme drought. She'll be back in Rolla this weekend.

4. THE MISFIT MATHEMATICIAN (Tom's column, http://tomsager.org)
          a) Awesome Speech by Bernie Sanders
          b) China and the Environment
          c) Crime of Fashion

AWESOME SPEECH BY BERNIE SANDERS

Bernie is not known for giving anti-war speeches; but his speech yesterday on the 15th anniversary of the illegal US invasion of Iraq was absolutely awesome. It's posted here on Common Dreams. If you don't want to read the whole speech, here are a few highlights:
“People in my country, the United States, and all over the world are sick and tired of spending billions and billions of dollars on nuclear weapons, war planes, missiles, bombs, and tanks.”

“War is never quick, and it is never easy.”

“The threat of climate change is a very clear example of why we all need to pull together, we are in this together. The United States can't do it alone, Europe can't do it alone, China can't do it alone, and no one country can do this alone.”

CHINA AND THE ENVIRONMENT

Here's a link to me reading Sara Pennypacker's “Sparrow Girl” to my grandchildren. “Sparrow Girl” tells the story of one of China's worst environmental disasters from the point of view of a little girl who saves seven sparrows during China's 1958 “War on the Sparrows.”

And here is a report on China's efforts to reduce air pollution. They appear to have made phenomenal progress.

CRIME OF FASHION

Along with fossil fuels, nuclear energy and animal husbandry: here's another dirty, environmentally unfriendly industry: Fashion. What can you do? Make your own clothes, buy at Community Thrift Store or Goodwill and continue to wear your old clothes. Can you think of other possibilities?
