3. BERNIE IN 2020

Today, Bernie Sanders announced his candidacy for the 2020 presidential election. As of 11:00 a.m. Eastern time, over $1 million in donations had been contributed to his campaign.

He has quite a number of rivals for the Democratic nomination, among them self-styled progressives like Senators Kamala Harris and Elizabeth Warren, both of whom have many supporters as well.

So why support Bernie instead of one of these, or someone like (gag!) Joe Biden? Well, for one thing, he is the only one who seems to understand the magnitude of the trouble this country (not to mention the planet) is in. Warren proudly calls herself a capitalist — she loves capitalism; she just wants it to be fair. Unfortunately, there's no such thing. In capitalism, for somebody to win, somebody else has to lose, and with that kind of dynamic, love for one's fellow man goes way to the back of the bus. Warren doesn't seem to get that capitalism, with its worship of profit, is destroying the planet.

Biden and most corporate Democrats are so brainwashed with corporate ideology that they don't seem able to think outside that box. The several other “progressive” candidates have good ideas, and probably good intentions, but they, too, aren't seeing the big picture.

Here is a listing of all the declared Democratic candidates (and some who are still on the fence). There is some brief biographical data on each, and a very incomplete description of their platforms.

Here is another take on why Bernie Sanders is our best bet.

And if you'd like to make a T-shirt or a sign supporting Bernie, here's a nice image, courtesy of Tom.

4. THE MISFIT MATHEMATICIAN (Tom's column, http://tomsager.org)
          a) US, Israel and Other Nations Meet in Warsaw to Plan War Against Iran
          b) A World-Wide Emergency

US, ISRAEL AND OTHER NATIONS MEET IN WARSAW TO PLAN WAR AGAINST IRAN

The Warsaw meeting, called to discuss regime change in Iran, was boycotted by most of Europe. While the US seeks regime change in oil-rich nations like Iran and Venezuela, the petrodollar system, in which oil is priced and traded in US dollars, appears to be in trouble. Some argue that if the petrodollar system falls, the U.S. will be in serious financial trouble. No wonder the US elite is fighting tooth and nail to prevent the world from turning away from fossil fuels. No wonder the US demonizes every oil-rich country which attempts to chart an independent policy.

The solution is clear. Wealthy countries should pay poor oil-rich countries to leave their oil in the ground, and, of course, leave their own oil in the ground too.

A WORLD-WIDE EMERGENCY

No, it's not just our southern border with Mexico. No, it's not just the United States or any one country. It's the WHOLE WORLD which is suffering the effects of climate change which will only get worse.

Here's some very sobering data, mostly from NOAA:
1. January 2019 was the third warmest January since record keeping began in 1880. This follows on the heals of December 2018 which was the second warmest December since record keeping began.

2. The latest five 12-month periods ending in January were the five warmest on record — by a long-shot.

3. Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere reached a whooping 412.41 ppm average last week at Mauna Loa, almost 4 ppm higher than the average one year ago. The highest weekly average recorded before 2019 was 411.85.

4. Climate change virtually wiped out the entire continent of Australia through drought, fire and flood.
Some think emergencies like this can be held at bay by building a wall. This would be funny if it wasn't so serious. Here's a short discussion by Debbie Weingarten of how counter-effective walls really are.
