1. NOON VIGIL FOR PEACE: THURSDAY, JANUARY 29, 2015

We vigil for peace in front of the Rolla Post Office THIS THURSDAY, JANUARY 29, 2015, (and all subsequent Thursdays until peace is established) from Noon to 1:00 PM. Please try to join us. The temperature is predicted to be in the 40s. If you do not feel comfortable standing with us in front of the Post Office, please consider driving by and showing your support for our message by honking your horn and flashing a peace sign.

2. STUDENT LOAN JUBILEE

This is an idea whose time should have come a long time ago. Our young college-aged people are paying a huge price for an education that prepares them for jobs that in many cases don't even exist any more. The job market is horrible — there are countless graduates working as baristas at Starbucks or flipping burgers at McDonalds, because there just aren't enough good-paying jobs to go around. Debt forgiveness for student loans would help the economy in the long run, as it would free up money to be spent on goods and services; but even more, it would encourage more young people to get an education and become better employees, or start businesses of their own. An educated populace contributes to a society that is better for everyone in it — which is why this will probably never happen. If you are not feeling so cynical, though, there is a link in the article you can click on to find out more about the proposal.

3. THE MISFIT MATHEMATICIAN (Tom's column, http://tomsager.org)
          a) A Dozen Damn Dams
          b) Nor'easter Juno — Yet Another “Historic” Storm
          c) Pope Francis to Take on Global Warming

A DOZEN DAMN DAMS

When we think of environmentally destructive energy, we usually think of fossil fuels or nuclear energy. But large-scale hydro-electric dams can be environmentally destructive too, as Peter Bosshard shows in this article from International Rivers. From the 1936 Hoover Dam which gave us Las Vegas while destroying downstream fisheries to China's Three Gorges Dam which displaced over 1 million people and ravaged the Yangze River ecosystem, large-scale hydro-electric projects have wreaked havoc on our environment.

NOR'EASTER JUNO — YET ANOTHER “HISTORIC” STORM

After Juno that is still pounding New England passes, the Northeast can expect still more harsh winter weather this week. Driven by an increasingly warm, moist climate, extreme precipitation events in the Northeast have increased by 70% and release 70% more precipitation than 6 decades ago.

POPE FRANCIS TO TAKE ON GLOBAL WARMING

Meanwhile Pope Francis plans a moral offensive against Global Warming to begin in March. This is good news that religious leaders are beginning to view combating Climate Change as a moral imperative. I hope they are not too late.
