1. NOON VIGIL FOR PEACE: THURSDAY, JANUARY 22, 2015

We vigil for peace in front of the Rolla Post Office THIS THURSDAY, JANUARY 22, 2015, (and all subsequent Thursdays until peace is established) from Noon to 1:00 PM. Please try to join us. The temperature is predicted to be in the high 30s. If you do not feel comfortable standing with us in front of the Post Office, please consider driving by and showing your support for our message by honking your horn and flashing a peace sign.

2. MLK: STILL RELEVANT TODAY

In honor of Martin Luther King, whose birthday was celebrated yesterday (though it was the 15th, not the 19th), it might be good to revisit his 1967 speech about Vietnam, which could equally be applied to the perpetual war being waged by our military in the Middle East and elsewhere. I believe I posted this same speech last year at this time, but it bears repeating, year after year if necessary, until we as a nation get it. War is still being waged by the wealthy and mighty against the poor and weak, and our nation's poor are paying the price at home, while men, women and children are dying abroad as “collateral damage” from our indiscriminate bombing and droning. Have we learned nothing in the last almost 50 years? Apparently not, except for more sophisticated ways of killing people and justifying it. Read it and weep.

A CARTOONIST MUST DIE

Last weeks snippet has been cleaned up and expanded and posted on my website along with a cartoon that may well be my most offensive yet.

And Noam Chomsky discusses the hypocrisy of “Je suis Charlie”.

HOTTEST YEAR ON RECORD

Since November I've been hearing that 2014 is on track to be the hottest year in recorded history. Now it's official. Enjoy the beach while you have the chance. With sea-levels rising, soon there may not be any more beaches to enjoy; and if there are, you may want to stay away from them (see Revenge of the Marshall's below).

REVENGE OF THE MARSHALLS

From 1948 to 1958, with no regard for the health of the Marshall Islanders, the US military used Eniwetok Island in the Marshall Islands to test atomic weaponry. In the 1970s the US “cleaned up” Eniwetok bulldozing over 100 pounds of plutonium, the most dangerous substance known to man, into a pit.

If one pound of plutonium could be distributed equally, it would be enough to kill the entire human population on Earth. Plutonium remains radioactive for hundreds of thousands of years.

Now, the highest point on Eniwetok is two meters above sea-level. Sea levels are slated to rise far higher than that as the planet warms and the ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica melt.

What happens to all that plutonium when Eniwetok is covered with corrosive sea water? Better stay away from beaches.
