Battle of the Generations
“The most significant characteristic of modern civilization is the sacrifice of the future for the present, and all the power of science has been prostituted to this purpose.” —William James
Last Friday the US 9th Circuit Court of Appeals threw out the case Juliana v. United States in a split 2 to 1 decision with Judge Andrew Hurwitz (Age 72) opining for the majority that although climate change has brought the world close to the “eve of destruction,” plaintiffs have NO STANDING to bring suit demanding that the government take action to reduce climate change. All three judges were Obama appointees.

The plaintiffs were aged 11 through 22 in 2015 when the suit was filed. They will all presumably be dealing with the evils caused by climate change long after the three judges are dead.

This case is not over yet. When youth challenges age, in the long run, youth will certainly prevail. However, in this case, it may turn out to be a Pyrrhic victory; as by then there may not be much left to win.

From Our Readers: Protect, Restore, Fund

A reader sends in this super-cool 3 minute video of 17-year old Greta Thunberg and long-time activist George Monbiot talking about how to save the world: Protect Nature; Restore damaged eco-systems; and fund solutions, not destruction.

Speaking Truth to Power

Hundreds of youngsters (and a few old-timers) descended upon the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland to tell world leaders (mostly old-timers like myself) to stop funding fossil fuels and become part of the solution, instead of the problem.

Equivalent to 50 Coal-Fired Power Plants

HFC-23 is over 12,000 times more potent as a greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide. Although the phasing out of HFC-23 should have been virtually complete, HFC-23 is now more prevalent in the atmosphere than at any time in history, Emissions of HFC-23 in 2018 are believed to be equivalent to emissions from 50 coal-fired power plants.

This underscores the need for international cooperation and independent monitoring for compliance, at a time when international tensions are increasing dramatically.

Fire and Rain
“Oh, I've seen fire and I've seen rain.
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end.”
—James Taylor (Fire and Rain)

Rains have finally come to Australia after months of drought and out-of-control fires. While the rain has helped immensely in controlling the fires, it was not completely a blessing. Ash washed into the rivers has killed hundreds of thousands of fish; and the flash floods, dust storms and hail that came with the rain have been destructive in their own right.

Weeks ago, I asked whether indigenous Australians practiced controlled burning like the indigenous California tribes. The answer is “Yes.” In fact, most indigenous peoples, where possible, used fire to control their environments; that is, before the coming of “modern civilization.”
