==================
We vigil for peace in front of the Rolla Post Office THIS THURSDAY, JANUARY 15, 2015, (and all subsequent Thursdays until peace is established) from Noon to 1:00 PM. Please try to join us. The temperature is predicted to be in the 40s. If you do not feel comfortable standing with us in front of the Post Office, please consider driving by and showing your support for our message by honking your horn and flashing a peace sign. 2. SAD NEWS Bassem Armaly, husband of Gery Armaly, one of our faithful regulars at the Thursday peace vigils, passed away on January 6, 2015. His obituary can be found here or in the newspaper. Our thoughts and prayers are with you, Gery. 3. CHARLIE AND THE DISPOSSESSED No reasonable person would say that the massacre at Charlie Hebdo was a good thing, but given the world situation today, actions of this sort are understandable, and, indeed, inevitable. When those who have everything mock the most deeply-held beliefs of those who have nothing, it's like throwing lighted matches into a pile of dynamite sticks. Eventually a fuse will catch, and an explosion will occur. And when the haves who are mocking the have-nots are seen as part of the entity responsible for them having nothing, it's even more likely that the have-nots will respond with violence. As Bob Dylan says, “When you ain't got nothing, you got nothing to lose.” Chris Hedges' excellent essay makes it very clear why this and other disasters will continue to happen until the powers that be recognize every human being's right to a decent life. For a different, equally valid view of the issue, read Tom's column below. 4. THE MISFIT MATHEMATICIAN (Tom's column, http://tomsager.org) A CARTOONIST MUST DIE This snippet has been cleaned up and expanded and posted on my website along with a cartoon that may well be my most offensive yet. ================== Rolla Peace News is distributed by email once a week on Tuesday evenings (except on rare occasions) and is posted on the web at http://tomsager.org (click on Grassroots Rolla: top of rightmost column).If you don't wish to get notices of peace events in the Rolla area, let me know and I'll take you off this list.
