1. THURSDAY NOON VIGIL FOR PEACE

Our weekly noon vigils are on Thursdays. We vigil for peace in front of the Rolla Post Office THIS THURSDAY, October 22, (and all subsequent Thursdays until peace is established) from Noon to 1:00 PM. Please try to join us. The temperature is predicted to be close to 60 under rainy skies. If you do not feel comfortable standing with us in front of the Post Office, please consider driving by and showing your support for our message by honking your horn and flashing a peace sign.

2. REQUEST FOR ART WORK FOR UNITY DAY AT S&T

Erin Hoode, hoodel@mst.edu , 341-6829, is requesting submissions from the S&T and Rolla communities of art work on the theme, "What does unity mean to you?" Submissions due by 4:30, Nov. 2 at 218 Havener Center. For more info contact Erin.

3. SO MUCH STUPIDITY. WHERE TO START?

Ted Rall gives some basic facts about Afghanistan and our leaders' myopia which ought to be familiar to most of us, (click here) . I cannot help but be impressed with the Afghans. They have fought against invaders from the dawn of history - Greeks, Persians, Mongols, and more. In the 20th century they defeated the British, then the Russians, and now in the 21st century - they appear to be defeating the greatest military machine the world has ever known. And here is an article about the Afghans to whom we are bringing "democracy" and "saving" from the Taliban, (click here) .

4. "GOOD NEWS" FOR VIETNAM VETS, BUT NOT FOR VIETNAMESE

38 years after the US spread deadly dioxin-laced Agent Orange over much of South Vietnam, the Pentagon acknowledges what we have known for a long time: Dioxin, in addition to 13 already recognized diseases, is responsible for three more dread diseases - Parkinson's, ischemic heart disease and hairy-cell leukemia. This comes too late for many Vietnam veterans, such as Rolla's Bill Gibbs, who died recently of dioxin poisoning. The Pentagon still denies any responsibility for the millions of Vietnamese also suffering from Agent Orange poisoning, (click here) .

5. PLAYING WITH FIRE

Last week I talked about The Military vs. The Environment and Barry Sanders new book, "The Green Zone: The environmental costs of militarism." A reader sends me a link to a summary of the book, "Angels don't play this kind of HAARP," (click here) . The summary discusses HAARP technology with which the military is blasting the ionosphere with high frequency electro-magnetic pulses which could disrupt the Earth's magnetic field, change weather patterns, and cause many other undesirable consequences. As Barbara Zickuhr puts it, "They're like boys playing with a sharp stick, finding a sleeping bear and poking it in the butt to see what's going to happen."
