1. NOON VIGIL FOR PEACE: THURSDAY, OCTOBER 1, 2015

We vigil for peace in front of the Rolla Post Office THIS THURSDAY, OCTOBER 1, 2015, (and all subsequent Thursdays until peace is established) from Noon to 1:00 PM. Please try to join us. The temperature is predicted to be in the 60s. If you do not feel comfortable standing with us in front of the Post Office, please consider driving by and showing your support for our message by honking your horn and flashing a peace sign.

2. THE SHELL GAME IS OVER (FOR NOW)

Great news! Shell Oil Co. has abandoned its plans to drill for offshore oil in the Arctic Ocean. As Hannah McKinnon's article points out, this is in large part due to the massive nonviolent protests and an information campaign that swayed public opinion to the point that it could not be ignored. Shell was also facing public opposition back home in the Netherlands, and they had spent billions and found no oil.

This isn't the only victory for the climate and the planet. Opposition to the Keystone pipeline has grown to such an extent that even a corporate lackey like Hillary Clinton has come out opposed to it. And Canadians in Alberta province, where much of the tar sands are located, have elected a new premier who promises to “strengthen environmental regulations and take action to curb the province's rapidly-rising greenhouse gas emissions.” It appears that the profit-at-any-price and by-any-means tactics of the energy corporations is finally being recognized by the citizens for what it is: Unmitigated greed at their expense and the expense of the planet. And they are starting to fight back. Here's another view of the situation.

The fight to save the planet isn't going to be a walk in the park, however. Shell may not drill in the Arctic, but they have lots of other options that will be nearly as destructive to the ecosystem. And Governor Bill Walker of Alaska is pushing for oil exploration in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, saying, “We need to get some oil in the pipeline...” So we have won a battle, but not yet the war.

WAR NOT GOING WELL? TRY PEACE

14 years into the endless War Against Afghanistan, the Taliban, who, we were told, were totally destroyed in the first months of the war, have captured Kunduz, an important provincial capital.

Saudi Arabia, US proxy in the War Against Yemen, bombs a wedding party killing over 100, including women and children . Yemen is one of the world's poorest countries.

US backed “moderate” Syrian rebels turn over US supplied arms to the al-Nusra front.

Meanwhile, as “the world hemorrhages, refugees flow from its wounds,” threatening to inundate Europe, as millions try to escape war and climate destruction.

And here in the United States, nine million acres have burned to the ground in what may become the worst fire-year ever.

So goes endless warfare. Maybe it's time to try Peace.
