1. THURSDAY NOON VIGIL FOR PEACE

Our weekly noon vigils are now on Thursdays. We vigil for peace in front of the Rolla Post Office THIS THURSDAY, August 6, (and all subsequent Thursdays until peace is established) from Noon to 1:00 PM. Please try to join us. The temperature is predicted to be in the mid to high 80s with a 30% chance of rain. If you do not feel comfortable standing with us in front of the Post Office, please consider driving by and showing your support for our message by honking your horn and flashing a peace sign.

2. HOW TO LIQUIDATE AN EMPIRE; AND 3 GOOD REASONS TO DO IT

Chalmers Johnson (author of the Blowback Trilogy) describes why and how we MUST liquidate our empire, (click here). This is a MUST READ. If we don't liquidate our empire voluntarily, it will surely liquidate us. The cost of maintaining 865 facilities deploying 190,000 troups in 46 overseas countries and territories comes to a staggering $250 Billion annually.

3. ENERGY ISSUES

Mark Haim points out that the article on nuclear energy that I linked to last week doesn't present a clear picture of where nuclear energy stands with respect to the production of greenhouse gas pollution. Nuclear energy generation produces more greenhouse gas pollution that renweables but less than fossil fuels. Mark recommends a study by Benjamin Sovacool (click here). I've posted a table from this article on my website (click here). Keep in mind that there is a wide range of estimates from various sources and that much more research on this issue remains to be done. The major drawbacks of nuclear energy are the issues of safety, waste disposal, cost, and other forms of pollution besides greenhouse gases, particularly radioactive pollution. 4. WARREN ANDERSON JOINS HENRY KISSINGER AND GEORGE W. BUSH ON INTERNATIONAL WANTED LIST

India has issued a warrant for the arrest of Warren Anderson, former CEO of Union Carbide at the time of the 1984 Bhopal Disaster which killed at least 10,000 people and made many more seriously ill, (click here). That a third world country can issue an arrest warrant for an elite member of the world's only superpower says volumes on how the world has changed over the past decade. Anderson is reportedly living the good life in The Hamptons, while thousands still suffer from the Bhopal disaster.
