1. THURSDAY NOON VIGIL FOR PEACE
Our weekly noon vigils are now on Thursdays. We vigil for peace in front of the Rolla Post Office THIS THURSDAY, July 30, (and all subsequent Thursdays until peace is established) from Noon to 1:00 PM. Please try to join us. The temperature is predicted to be in the mid 70s with rain likely. If you do not feel comfortable standing with us in front of the Post Office, please consider driving by and showing your support for our message by honking your horn and flashing a peace sign.
2. ROLLA PEACE NEWS ON WEB
I've placed this newsletter and a few previous ones on my website,
www.tomsager.org . (Click on links under my photo in the top left corner.)
3. THE POLITICS OF DENIAL
George Monbiot discusses how a policy based on denial that was supposed to lead to a decrease in teenage pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases has actually led to an increase, (click here). It occurred to me in reading this article that one could easily make the case that a policy of denial that was supposed to have led to a more secure world has in fact decreased security throughout the world. While we seem to be moving toward a more rational policy toward teenage pregnancies and STDs; as far as world security goes, it seems to be more of the same - perpetual war in a vain search for security.
4. JAPAN ATTEMPTS TO REGAIN LEAD IN SOLAR ENERGY
Japan is attempting to regain its lead in solar energy and make solar energy competitive with other energy generation technologies, (click here). Ben Williams debunks the myth that nuclear energy is "pollution free," examining the entire nuclear fuel life cycle and concluding that nuclear energy is no answer to the threat of climate change and pollution, (click here). We are now involved in wasteful energy intensive wars to control the world's dwindling fossil fuel resources. The solution is, of course, conservation + non-polluting renewables like solar energy. If we could solve our energy problems at home, maybe our leaders wouldn't feel the need to go to war in a vain attempt to seek energy security quite so strongly.
