1. THURSDAY NOON VIGIL FOR PEACE
Our weekly noon vigils are now on Thursdays. We vigil for peace in front of the Rolla Post Office THIS THURSDAY, July 16, (and all subsequent Thursdays until peace is established) from Noon to 1:00 PM. Please try to join us. The temperature is predicted to be in the low 80s with a chance of rain. If you do not feel comfortable standing with us in front of the Post Office, please consider driving by and showing your support for our message by honking your horn and flashing a peace sign.
2. ROLLA PEACE NEWS ON WEB
I've placed this newsletter and a few previous ones on my website,
www.tomsager.org . (Click on links under my photo in the top left corner.) Also check out my Rolla City Council cartoons, (click on link near top of page).
3. SHOWDOWN IN TEGUCIGOLPE
Stephen Zunes brings the recent coup in Hondoras into focus, including the Obama administration's inadequate response,
4. FRENCH NUCLEAR "RENAISSANCE" FIZZLES
Nuclear power, which I learned as a child would be safe and too cheap to meter fails again. According to
The New York Times
the French nuclear "renaissance" is fizzling like a wet firdecracker. Meanwhile, a summer heatwave has forced 1/3 of French nuclear plants to shut down according to
Beyond Nuclear
. What to do with all the radioactive waste remains one of many unsolved problems.
5. ANOTHER TOXIC WAR
Modern war is toxic. There is no getting around that. Thousands of US troops came home from Vietnam suffering from dioxin poisoning. Most went undetected and untreated. Vietnamese victims of dioxin poisoning numbered in the millions. In the First Gulf War, environmental disease was called "Gulf War Syndrome." Not surprisingly, environmental disease is striking veterans of the current war also,
(click here), and, of course, civilian too, in far greater numbers. Clearly, war creates environmental problems faster than they can be solved. If you want a clean environment, work for peace.
