1. NOON VIGIL FOR PEACE: THURSDAY, OCTOBER 15, 2020

We vigil for peace in front of the Rolla Post Office, THIS THURSDAY, OCTOBER 15, FROM NOON TO 1:00 PM (and most subsequent Thursdays until Peace is established). Please join us again this Thursday in saying NO WAR AGAINST IRAN or any other country. The temperature is predicted to be in the 50s. If you do not feel comfortable standing with us in front of the Post Office, please consider driving by and showing your support for our message by honking your horn and flashing a peace sign.

Note: Since there are so few of us, generally 2 or 3, no need to cancel; but let's maintain social distancing.

2. THE MISFIT MATHEMATICIAN (Tom's column, http://tomsager.org)

“The Outsider, The Stranger” — That's Us

This message to the world from Nemonte Nenquimo, leader of the Waorani people of the Amazon rainforest is a MUST READ.

As the Amazon burns and its rivers run with oil and other toxins, she writes to us:
“In each of our many hundreds of different languages across the Amazon, we have a word for you — the outsider, the stranger. In my language, WaoTededo, that word is ‘cowori’. And it doesn’t need to be a bad word. But you have made it so. For us, the word has come to mean (and in a terrible way, your society has come to represent): the white man that knows too little for the power that he wields, and the damage that he causes.”
Two years ago, I wrote a short snippet about Ms. Nenquimo. I ended it with the observation:
“We should be nurturing the few hunter-gatherers left among us, like the survival of our species depends upon them — because it does. As the Web of Life unravels and ‘civilizations’ collapse, hunter-gatherers may be all that remains of the human race.”
I think there is very little understanding, particularly among the elite classes in powerful nations, of just how close we are as a species to suicide.

Meanwhile, ...

In spite of a gathering La Niña that should be cooling surface temperatures, the Earth has just experienced its warmest September on record (Copernicus).

Uncontrollable fires have burned a record four million plus acres in California as well as much of South America. Elsewhere, the Earth is also experiencing terrible fires.

The world moves closer to all-out war as the United States ramps up sanctions on Iran.

Over the past seven days, the world has experienced well over 2 million new confirmed cases of COVID-19 and over 35 thousand deaths.

To repeat, I think there is very little understanding, particularly among the elite classes in powerful nations, of just how close we are as a species to suicide. And Ms. Nenquimo is absolutely correct in saying we know too little for the power that we wield, and the damage that we cause.
